Lavrov: Azerbaijan supports Russian Caspian plan

Azerbaijan supports Russia's proposals on resolving the issue of shallowing of the Caspian Sea.

Axar.az reports that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the remarks during a joint press conference following the talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Moscow.

According to the Russian FM, the parties reviewed to environmental issues of the Caspian Sea, including its shallowing.

"I should like once again to recall that it was the President of Azerbaijan who put forward the initiative to review these challenges. Our Azerbaijani colleagues pledged to support the proposals of the Russian side, specifically on the issues of shallowing," the minister noted.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia regularly organizes expert hydrographic expeditions on a vessel to study the environmental situation on the ground and intends to support any initiatives aimed at protecting the Caspian ecosystem.

The Russian FM highlighted the importance of completing the ratification process of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea as soon as possible. "All Caspian littoral states, except Iran, have already ratified the document, which is important for the final conclusion of the legal regulation of the Caspian Sea. However, the countries of the Caspian region are trying to practically fulfill the fundamental obligations contained in the Convention," Lavrov emphasized.
