The US will consider applying pressure on Israel to encourage the withdrawal of its troops from Lebanese territory, US President Donald Trump has stated during a meeting with President Joseph Aoun at the White House.
The question followed accusations by the Lebanese army that Israeli forces had fired on its positions in the pilot zone of Zawtar al-Gharbiyah in southern Lebanon, Caliber.Az reports, citing Fox News.
Earlier in the day, a mechanised column of the Lebanese army entered Zawtar al-Gharbiyah after Israeli troops withdrew from the area.
According to Asharq Al-Awsat, the Lebanese army is expected to demonstrate its ability to maintain stability in the region and begin disarming supporters of the Shiite group Hezbollah.
Trump suggested that Syria also could deploy troops to Lebanon to help combat the Shiite movement.
“We get along very well with the president of Syria. He has done a very good job. I wouldn’t be surprised if this gentleman is gonna do a job just like that. He is done a very good job. He has pulled Syria together. He would like to come in and do something with Hezbollah <…> He has been fighting Hezbollah for a long time,” he remarked.
