China and the United States are holding talks on reducing reciprocal tariffs on goods worth around $30 billion, a senior Chinese commerce official has said, signalling continued efforts by the world's two largest economies to ease trade tensions.
Meng Huating, head of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration at China's Ministry of Commerce, said the two sides were discussing a framework for mutually lowering tariffs on affected goods, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Speaking at a press briefing, Meng said the discussions followed US President Donald Trump's recent visit to China, during which the leaders of both countries agreed on what she described as “constructive relationship of strategic stability on the basis of fairness and reciprocity” between Beijing and Washington.
She added that Chinese authorities were consulting domestic businesses, regional governments and industry associations on proposals related to tariff reductions.
The negotiations focus on dismantling trade barriers imposed during a period of heightened protectionism by the White House.
According to data from China's General Administration of Customs, trade between China and the United States totalled more than $289 billion in the first six months of 2026, broadly unchanged from the same period a year earlier.
