FM: Iraq hails PKK disbandment as hope for regional peace

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has welcomed the decision by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to disband and disarm, calling it a “hopeful and promising” development that could foster peace in Türkiye and the wider region.

Speaking at a press conference in Baghdad, Hussein described the move as a positive step, emphasising Iraq’s commitment to supporting regional stability, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

“We hope this decision will open the path to peace in the region and in Türkiye,” he said.

The minister added that the Iraqi central government would work in coordination with Türkiye and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to follow up on the issue. Turning to international developments, Hussein commented on the visit of US President Donald Trump to Saudi Arabia, expressing satisfaction with the agreements reached between Washington and Gulf leaders. He also welcomed Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria.

Addressing the upcoming Arab League summit, set for May 17 in Baghdad, Hussein acknowledged that not all Arab leaders may attend due to internal circumstances but stressed that participation would remain active.

“Real and pressing regional issues will be discussed,” he noted. The summit is also expected to result in resolutions supporting Syria and other Arab nations.

From May 5 to 7, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) held its 12th congress, during which the group officially announced its decision to lay down arms and dissolve the organisation. In a final declaration released at the end of the congress, the PKK stated: “The armed struggle is over, the weapons are laid down.”

This significant development followed a call by Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), who urged the PKK to disband and abandon armed activities as part of the broader “Terror-free Türkiye” initiative. The PKK's decision to convene its congress and make this historic announcement appears to have been a direct response to this appeal.
