ECO Summit in Khankendi ends with key communiqué

The 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit was held in the city of Khankendi, Azerbaijan, on July 3–4, 2025.

Axar.az reports that according to the information provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Summit, dedicated to the theme “A New Vision for the ECO for a Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Future,” was preceded by the ECO Youth Forum in Agdam on July 1, the ECO Women’s Forum in Lachin on July 2, and the 6th ECO Business Forum in Shusha on July 2.

The 17th ECO Summit was concluded with the adoption of the Chairman’s Summary, the Khankendi Communiqué.

The Khankendi Communiqué highly praised the large-scale reconstruction and construction work in the liberated Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions of Azerbaijan.

The communiqué also reaffirmed the right of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia to return to their homeland with dignity.

In line with the theme of the summit, economic sustainability, and climate resilience were identified as key priorities on the future agenda of the OIC.

The environmental initiatives of the women leaders of the OIC region, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva and First Lady of the Republic of Turkey Emine Erdogan, in particular the "Zero Waste" initiative, were highly appreciated.

The communiqué considered it important to launch the OIC Clean Energy Center and expand the activities of the OIC Research Center.

The document supported the strengthening of the mandate of "OIC Capital", the Council of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, a single information space, and the OIC Trade and Development Bank.

The importance of sustainable urban development and the World Urban Forum (WUF13) to be held in Baku next year was emphasized.
