Israeli official: “Substantial chance” of Gaza ceasefire deal as talks progress

There is “a substantial chance” that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could soon be agreed, according to Israeli Minister Zeev Elkin, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet.

“Hamas wants to change a few central matters, it’s not simple, but there is progress,” Elkin told Israel’s public broadcaster Kan on July 8, Caliber.Az reports.

Diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict in Gaza have intensified, with mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt pushing for a resolution. The renewed momentum follows the launch of indirect talks in Doha on July 6 and Prime Minister Netanyahu’s departure for Washington to meet US officials.

On July 7, Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump, who expressed optimism about an agreement, saying a ceasefire and hostage deal “could be reached this week.” The Israeli leader was scheduled to meet Vice President J.D. Vance on July 8.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff—who has played a key role in shaping the ceasefire proposal—will travel to Doha this week to participate in the ongoing discussions.

The ceasefire framework reportedly involves a phased release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza, and negotiations aimed at ending the war entirely. However, core disagreements remain. Hamas continues to demand a full end to the war before releasing the remaining hostages, while Israel insists it will not agree to a ceasefire until all hostages are freed and Hamas is dismantled.

At least 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are believed to still be alive.

Palestinian sources on July 7 noted ongoing gaps in the negotiations, particularly concerning the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Senior Israeli officials briefing reporters in Washington acknowledged that finalising an agreement may take more than a few days but did not provide details on the sticking points. Another Israeli official confirmed that progress had been made.
