Turkish Expert: Middle and Zangezur Corridors shape the region’s strategic future

The annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Tianjin, China, holds significant importance for fostering multipolar cooperation and establishing new economic corridors in the region. In his speech at the "SCO Plus" format meeting, President Ilham Aliyev particularly emphasized the strategic importance of the Zangezur and Middle Corridors. These corridors not only enhance Azerbaijan’s transit capabilities but also create a favorable foundation for new economic and transport connections at regional and global levels. The messages delivered during the Tianjin meeting indicate that Azerbaijan and Türkiye can play a crucial role in strengthening their strategic positions in regional transit and logistics networks, facilitating the integration of the Middle and North-South Corridors, Turkish political expert Ali Fuad Gökçe told AZERTAC.

He analyzed the emerging geopolitical realities in the region, stating that the Tianjin meeting once again underscored the necessity of a multipolar world. According to him, in this context, the Middle Corridor within China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative holds particular significance.

“For the Middle Corridor to operate more efficiently and cost-effectively, the opening of the Zangezur Corridor is essential. This route will strengthen ties between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as well as Türkiye’s connections with the Turkic states of Central Asia. As a result, the expansion of trade relations will enhance the economic power of Turkic states,” Ali Fuad Gökçe emphasized.

He further noted that the Zangezur Corridor is significant not only for Turkic states but also for Armenia and the overall stability of the region. According to him, Iran’s involvement in this process is also a critical factor. The “3+3” format, proposed after the Karabakh war, creates opportunities for resolving regional issues without the interference of imperial powers.

In conclusion, Ali Fuad Gökçe added that when the Middle Corridor is integrated with the Zangezur Corridor, it transforms into a more purposeful and strategically significant project.
