Official: COP29 and COP30 teams collaborate on programme to tackle global climate financing gap

The teams for COP29 and COP30 have commenced work on developing a collaborative programme, according to Mukhtar Babaev, the special representative of Azerbaijan's President for climate issues.

Speaking at the session titled “Local Actions, Global Changes: NGOs in the Fight Against Climate Challenges in the Global South,” Babaev outlined that the programme will be presented by the COP29 team in Belen, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

It focuses on addressing the gap in climate financing, a shortfall ranging from $300 billion to $1.3 trillion.

Today, Baku is hosting the founding conference of the NGO Platform Global South, with the participation of NGO leaders and representatives from civil society across 116 countries, home to approximately 80% of the world's population.

To recall, Azerbaijan played a significant role at COP29 in Baku, held in November 2024, advancing global climate action. The country introduced initiatives such as Green Energy Zones and the Black Sea Cable, aimed at exporting renewable energy to Europe.

Azerbaijan also focused on hydrogen development, promoting both green and blue hydrogen production to diversify its energy portfolio. Additionally, the country partnered with ACWA Power to develop a $250 million energy storage project, stabilising renewable energy supply in the region.

COP29 also saw key global agreements, including a deal to establish a carbon credit trading market and a target of $300 billion annually in climate finance by 2035 for developing nations. While Azerbaijan's contributions highlighted its leadership in the energy transition, some developing countries criticized the climate finance deal, calling it insufficient.

Looking forward, Azerbaijan’s commitment to tripling its renewable energy capacity and enhancing energy efficiency by 2030 positions it as a central player in global climate efforts. Its actions at COP29 reinforce its role in driving sustainable energy solutions and integrating climate action with broader development goals.
