Two drones were spotted over a Bundeswehr military facility in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Thursday evening.
Axar.az informs, citing Die Zeit, that the site’s security center reported the drones at around 10 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the Bundeswehr’s Operational Command.
Military police investigated the incident before handing the case over to police in Euskirchen, who have launched an investigation.
The incident comes shortly after a suspected drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was found near a Ukrainian transport aircraft. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described that incident as a possible hybrid attack and said foreign powers could be behind it.
Suspicious drone flights over airports and military facilities have increased in Germany in recent years. According to Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, more than 1,000 such overflights were recorded in 2025.
Germany's National Security Council held a meeting today in connection with the incident.
