U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned visit to China in April may face uncertainty due to a $20 billion new arms sale to Taiwan.
Axar.az reports, citing Bloomberg, that the new sale has provoked Chinese displeasure and could put Trump’s April trip to China at risk.
The arms sale would be in addition to an $11 billion contract announced last December and would include Patriot and NASAMS missiles, drones, and artillery systems. It would be one of the largest arms acquisitions for Taiwan to date.
So far, the U.S. Department of Defense, State Department, and the White House have not responded to inquiries regarding the matter.
It should be noted that on February 4, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump stated that he plans to visit China in April while trying to resolve differences over trade, rare earth elements, Taiwan, and other issues.
