Azerbaijan condemns Russia discussing Karabakh

During the meeting held in Moscow on April 1 between President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, and in subsequent public discussions by Russian officials, issues pertaining purely to Azerbaijan’s internal affairs were raised.

Axar.az reports that these views were included in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan (MFA) regarding recent remarks made in Russia about Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region.

In this regard, through diplomatic channels, our position on the inadmissibility of using Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region for political speculation and our expectations for its cessation have been conveyed to the Presidential Administration, Government, and MFA of Russia.

Nevertheless, the topic continues in the official political discourse of the Russian side. For example, today, Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the Russian President, while giving an interview to the Vesti channel on Russia-Armenia relations, again commented on whether the recognition of the Karabakh region as part of Azerbaijan should first come from Russia or Armenia.

The status of the Karabakh region as an integral part of Azerbaijan does not depend on the decision of any state, but rests on history, international law, and justice. This was once again confirmed and fully restored as a result of the 2020 44-day Patriotic War and the 2023 one-day anti-terror operation.

We would like to remind the Russian side once again that no country, including the Russian Federation, at any time has questioned Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, including the Karabakh region.

We once again convey to the Russian side our expectations that matters pertaining to Azerbaijan’s sovereignty should not become a subject of public discussion in the current period, when Russia-Armenia relations are not straightforward.
