President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Kaya Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, on May 5.
Axar.az reports that during the meeting, previous encounters between President Ilham Aliyev and Kaya Kallas were recalled with satisfaction, and it was noted that effective discussions on expanding cooperation were held during her visit to the country in 2025.
Kaya Kallas conveyed greetings from the President of the European Council Antonio Costa to the head of state.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude for the greetings and asked her to convey his regards to Antonio Costa.
Kaya Kallas highlighted the importance of the joint statement adopted by the President of Azerbaijan and the President of the European Council during Costa’s visit, emphasizing the strategic nature of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
She stated that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the European Union.
President Ilham Aliyev spoke about prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU in energy, connectivity, security, trade, and other areas. He stressed that the EU is one of Azerbaijan’s key trading partners, while Azerbaijan is a reliable partner in ensuring Europe’s energy security. In this context, he noted that Azerbaijani gas has recently reached two more EU member states — Germany and Austria.
The meeting also addressed the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s steps to strengthen the peace agenda. It was noted that economic and trade relations between the two countries are already being formed, including Azerbaijan’s unilateral lifting of restrictions on transit cargo to Armenia. The participation of the President of Azerbaijan via video link in the 8th summit of the European Political Community held in Yerevan the previous day was described as a historic event.
It was emphasized that current Azerbaijan–EU cooperation priorities include digital transformation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and other areas.
EU support for mine clearance in Azerbaijan was praised, and it was noted that the launch of the TRIPP project would create new opportunities for regional connectivity.
The sides exchanged views on the prospects of Azerbaijan–EU relations and other issues of mutual interest.
