The European Union could begin direct membership negotiations with Ukraine as early as June this year.
Axar.az informs that EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Kos said that an EU summit on the European integration path of the Western Balkans will be held in Podgorica, Montenegro, on June 5, and stressed the importance of discussing Ukraine’s accession process during the event.
“We can begin negotiations on the first cluster before the end of the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU in June, while the remaining five clusters could be opened in July,” she said.
Kos also noted that she had received a “positive message” from Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar on the issue, adding that he is ready to treat all EU candidate countries “equally.”
