France has summoned Iran’s acting chargé d’affaires following the detention of two French diplomats in Iran, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, July 21, condemning the incident as a serious breach of diplomatic norms.
The Iranian envoy was called to the Quai d’Orsay after the two diplomats were detained on Sunday while carrying out official duties in Iran. According to French authorities, the diplomats have since been released and are expected to return to France shortly.
“He was informed of our strongest condemnation of this deliberate and intentional aggressive act,” the ministry said in a statement.
Paris said the incident constituted a violation of the Vienna Conventions, which guarantee the protection and safety of diplomatic personnel, and warned that the действия “will not remain without consequences.”
“France expects the Iranian authorities to clarify the circumstances of this incident, punish those responsible and ensure the safety of our facilities and staff in accordance with their international obligations,” the statement added.
Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said earlier that the two diplomats had been engaged in implementing French programmes in Iran aimed at “supporting civil society,” including work involving Iranian scientists and artists.
He said the diplomats were held for several hours and questioned, adding that one of them was subjected to rough treatment during the detention.
