Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said that a long-term peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved by making decisions without Kyiv’s participation.
Axar.az reports that, in an interview with Kathimerini, Sikorski said Washington’s diplomatic efforts to end the war should be welcomed but stressed that Ukraine must be directly involved in any peace agreement.
“Any long-term peace in our region cannot be engineered over the heads of the Ukrainians. It must be a peace that Kyiv and Moscow actually sign off on. Moreover, Europe – and that explicitly means Poland – must have a prominent seat at that negotiating table.”
Sikorski also called for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security, while maintaining NATO as the framework for collective defense.
“We need far deeper military integration. This is why I strongly advocate for a ‘European Legion’, a dedicated, standing force that could recruit seasoned professionals from the broader European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans after the war,” he said.
According to Sikorski, such a force should complement NATO rather than create a parallel military alliance.
“What we need is a stronger European pillar within a stronger NATO. Our interests are complementary, not contradictory.”
He also accused Russia of waging hybrid warfare against European countries, citing alleged sabotage, disinformation, assassination attempts and drone incursions.
“Russia has already declared war on us, it just doesn’t involve tanks,” Sikorski said. “The Kremlin is waging a frantic campaign to fracture our societies.”
He added that Europe must remain involved in efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine, saying that European countries are directly affected by the conflict and Russia’s actions.
