US President Donald Trump signed legislation Friday imposing new sanctions on Russia and allowing tariffs of up to 100% on major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas.
Axar.az reports, citing CBS News, that the bill, championed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, was passed by the House with bipartisan support earlier this week after clearing the Senate in August.
The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 authorizes the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas. It also imposes sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, government officials, oligarchs, banks and other financial institutions.
The legislation is expected to have the greatest impact on China and India, the largest purchasers of Russian crude oil. Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24.
The law also extends sanctions on Iran’s energy and weapons sectors.
Graham had pushed for the legislation shortly before his death in July at the age of 71. Trump delivered the eulogy at his funeral.
The measure comes as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, with no clear end to the conflict. Earlier this month, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
