UN: Civilian casualties in Ukraine hit September record

At least 328 civilians were killed and 2,105 injured in Ukraine in September 2026, the highest monthly toll for September since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

Axar.az reports, citing the UN, that the number of civilian casualties was 85% higher than in September 2025, when 249 people were killed and 1,068 injured.

From January to September 2026, at least 2,570 civilians were killed and 15,211 injured, representing a 59% increase compared with the same period last year.

Long-range missiles and drones accounted for 53% of civilian casualties in September, while short-range drones accounted for another 23%.

Civilian casualties were recorded in 22 regions and Kyiv. The capital suffered the highest toll, with 32 people killed and 340 injured. Kherson, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia were also heavily affected.

The report also said Russian forces had resumed large-scale coordinated attacks on Ukraine’s electricity and heating infrastructure, with strikes on September 30 damaging facilities in three regions and Kyiv, triggering emergency power outages.
