Ambassador: Ukraine strongly condemns Russia's repressive actions against Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg

The Ukrainian side strongly condemns the repressive actions against Azerbaijanis in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, said Ukraine's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Yuriy Husyev, APA reports.

He said that the attack by the Russian authorities on Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg is not just an isolated incident, but a manifestation of systemic violence fueled by impunity and hatred for human life: “For years, Russia, which violates international law, launched an aggressive war against Ukraine, and persecutes its own citizens for their political beliefs, is now directing its repressive apparatus against citizens of other countries.”

The diplomat also emphasized that this unlawful act of violence carried out by certain Russian power structures has rightfully triggered a reaction from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the public:

“A similar reaction is not only logical but also necessary in an environment where the rights of national minorities are systematically violated and the arbitrariness of power structures has become the norm in modern Russia,” he stated.

The diplomat recalled that Ukraine has been facing Russian aggression, which has manifested itself in various criminal acts, for many years.

Y. Husev called on the peoples of Ukraine and Azerbaijan to show mutual support. He also called on the international community to respond to the act of violence committed against the affected Azerbaijanis:

“The world must respond to this crime. Because silence only creates conditions for impunity. Political, diplomatic, and sanction pressure on Moscow must be strengthened so that such tragedies do not repeat either in Yekaterinburg, Kyiv, or anywhere else.”

Recall that on the morning of June 27, officers of the Russian Federal Security Service raided homes of Azerbaijanis in the city of Yekaterinburg. During the raid, two people were killed, and several were injured. The Azerbaijanis killed are the brothers of the well-known journalist Seyfaddin Huseynli.

After that, on June 28, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the attacks against Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg:

“We expect Russia to conduct an urgent investigation into the matter and to hold those who committed this unacceptable violence accountable in a short time,” the statement emphasized.
