Statements claiming that Armenia's only operating nuclear power plant, the Metsamor NPP, is outdated and poses a threat to the region are attempts to drive a wedge into Moscow and Yerevan's cooperation in the nuclear sector.
Axar.az reports, citing local media, that Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova made the remarks.
"One can't help but wonder what goals international players, who either develop nuclear energy themselves or have no serious issues with their own electricity supply, have in mind when they occasionally speak out against the Russian-Armenian nuclear project. We see such leaks as attempts to drive a wedge into Russian-Armenian cooperation in this sector," she said.
Zakharova added that the Metsamor NPP has a "solid margin of safety": its reactor is specifically adapted to the region's high seismic activity.
The plant's reliability, she noted, is also confirmed by the IAEA.
