A rescue team on Saturday released a humpback whale from a barge in the North Sea after it had been stranded in shallow waters near Germany since March.
Axar.az reports, citing dpa international, that Jens Schwarck, a member of the private initiative on site, said the whale was released at around 9 a.m. local time.
Drone footage showed a whale swimming and spouting water near the barge, although it has not yet been confirmed whether it was Timmy.
Timmy was first spotted in the region on March 3. It remains unclear why the whale entered the Baltic Sea, far from its natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean. Some experts suggest it may have lost its way while following a shoal of herring or during migration.
Since then, the animal has repeatedly become stranded in shallow waters. It showed clear signs of distress, with irregular breathing and little movement for days.
Timmy was also suffering from a severe skin condition linked to the Baltic Sea’s low salinity, and rescuers applied large amounts of zinc ointment.
