BRICS leaders are set to adopt a position contrary to US President Donald Trump’s policies on trade tariffs, the Middle East conflict, and climate change at their upcoming summit in Brazil, starting on July 6.
A draft statement, seen by officials involved in the talks, will express “serious concern” about unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures, Caliber.Az reports, citing Bloomberg.
While the US is not named explicitly, the criticism targets Trump’s “America first” approach and his unilateral tariffs imposed globally. Countries, including founding BRICS member India, are scrambling to negotiate with the US ahead of a July 9 deadline for the tariffs to take effect.
Despite this challenge to Washington, internal divisions persist within BRICS. Some members, such as India, maintain closer relations with the US, wary of the bloc becoming dominated by China, its largest economy.
The leaders, meeting under Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Rio de Janeiro, also plan to address the conflict in Gaza. The draft text may express “grave concern” over renewed Israeli attacks and the blockade of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories.
It could condemn the use of starvation as a method of warfare — a charge Israel denies — and call for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, opposing the forced displacement of Palestinians.
If included, this language would come ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with Trump at the White House on July 7, potentially complicating diplomatic efforts.
On climate, BRICS is expected to reaffirm support for the Paris Agreement, which the US exited under Trump. The bloc will also call for global governance of artificial intelligence to manage emerging risks, contrasting with the US resistance to AI regulation.
The BRICS group includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and newer members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the UAE. The summit will also welcome ten partner countries, such as Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Vietnam, and Thailand.
