Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reaffirmed the need for a new Constitution.
Speaking at an event commemorating the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, Pashinyan emphasised that Armenia requires a new Constitution approved by popular vote—one that the people will feel ownership of and that reflects a way of life created by the citizens for their homeland-state, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Earlier, Minister of Justice Srbui Galyan indicated that the draft of the new Constitution could be completed within 10 months, though the timeline will depend on the progress of ongoing discussions. She also announced that the Constitutional Reform Council will hold its first meeting in a long time within two weeks.
He pointed out that the legal framework established over the past 35 years is still seen by many Armenians as something imposed without their involvement. According to the Prime Minister, the new Constitution should have a clear purpose aligned with the current reality, where citizens view their homeland and state as unified.
Pashinyan stressed that the new Constitution must clearly express that the citizen and the state are inseparable, representing the Republic of Armenia itself.
The current Armenian Constitution was adopted in 1995 and underwent reforms in 2005 and 2015. The 2015 amendments shifted the country from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of government.
