US President Donald Trump will keep all options on the table regarding Iran, including potential military action, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said.
Axar.az reports that Waltz made the remarks in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” while discussing Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and renewed negotiations.
Asked whether he could confirm a report that Trump was preparing to resume military strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections, Waltz said the report was anonymous.
“I can tell you the president will leave all options on the table to ensure the world is safe from Iran holding the world hostage with a nuclear weapon,” Waltz said.
He added that Trump had made clear that politics had nothing to do with the US position on Iran.
“This is about keeping the next generation safe from Iran threatening the world with a nuclear weapon or building such a mountain of conventional shield of drones and missiles that they can achieve breakout in these underground facilities behind that shield,” Waltz said.
Asked what remained to be accomplished in the war after Trump repeatedly said Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been destroyed, Waltz said the US had damaged Iran’s ability to enrich uranium at several facilities but claimed Tehran had moved and dispersed highly enriched uranium.
“There is no reason, no country on earth with a peaceful civilian program has a need to enrich, to weapons grade or just short of weapons grade,” Waltz said.
Waltz said Trump was open to an agreement under which Iran would comply with its international obligations and address its enriched uranium and ability to restore its enrichment capabilities.
“There is a number of ways that we can get there and President Trump is open to that and deal with a highly enriched, their ability to reconstitute their enrichment. Heck, our negotiators even offered to sell them uranium,” he said.
