EU defence ministers made no new commitments on September 28 to provide Ukraine with interceptor missiles for Patriot air defence systems, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said.
“On the interceptors, unfortunately, there were no new pledges made today, so many were pleading for this swap,” she said.
Earlier, Kallas said Ukraine needed additional interceptor missiles for its Patriot systems ahead of winter and called on EU member states with such missiles in their stockpiles to provide them to Kyiv.
Kallas also said that €1 billion of the €6.6 billion allocated to Ukraine through the European Peace Facility would be used for joint procurement.
Earlier reports said that a new US military aid package for Ukraine did not include missiles for Patriot air defence systems. At the same time, the Trump administration plans to use the full $400 million previously approved by the US Congress for aid to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said during a meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian community in the United States that an agreement had been reached on a new package of missiles for Patriot air defence systems.
Speaking at a briefing in New York, Zelenskyy also said Ukraine was collecting 100 missiles, “one or two at a time,” directly from heads of state. He stressed that the United States was the only country capable of providing assistance on a large scale.
