The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has expressed condolences to Iran following the victims of the explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port in the city of Bandar Abbas.
"We are deeply saddened by the devastating explosion at Shaheed Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, Islamic Republic of Iran," Caliber.Az quotes the Ministry as saying on its X page.
"We express heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives, and to the people and government of Iran. We sincerely hope for the early recovery of those who were injured," the Ministry added.
A catastrophic explosion occurred on April 26, 2025, at Iran's Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and over 700 injuries. The blast, originating from several containers in the port's Sina yard, is believed to have been caused by improperly stored hazardous materials, including sodium perchlorate—a chemical used in missile fuel.
The explosion produced a massive fire and a plume of black smoke visible for kilometers. The shockwave shattered windows and caused structural damage to buildings several kilometers away. At least one building collapsed due to the blast. The explosion was reportedly heard as far as Qeshm Island, located 26km south of Bandar Abbas, and was felt at a distance of 50km from the site.
