Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov, currently visiting Italy, participated in a high-level ministerial event titled “From Vulnerability to Resilience - Strengthening Food Security and Better Life in Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries,” held at the headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome.
Opening the event, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted that developing countries face challenges in meeting their food needs and ensuring food security due to global climate change and economic instability. The Director-General underscored that transforming developing countries’ agro-food systems from vulnerability to resilience requires a multifaceted approach incorporating tailored solutions, technological innovations, and strengthened partnerships.
The event emphasized the necessity of building sustainable, inclusive, and transformative agro-food systems in the context of growing threats to global food security, particularly challenges posed by climate change, resource scarcity, economic instability, and unequal development. Other notable speakers highlighted the importance of collective action and joint efforts in addressing interconnected and pressing challenges. According to experts, sharing best practices and innovative solutions aimed at ensuring food security can significantly boost the development of inclusive and sustainable agro-food systems in these countries.
The event continued with panel sessions on “Unlocking potentials with technology and innovation for improved productivity and sustainability in agrifood systems,” “Nutrition and Development in Vulnerable States,” and “Financing and Partnerships for Resilient Agro-Food Systems.” The panel sessions discussed issues such as climate change and natural resource depletion, creating a sustainable agricultural system to address new challenges, digital transformation of the agricultural sector, technology transfer, and sharing best practices. Experts shared their views on soil protection, biodiversity conservation, water-use efficiency, the creation of large grain farms through modern technologies, enhancing productivity, improving wheat self-sufficiency, and developing the processing industry.
