Ankara slams EU for overlooking Türkiye's candidate status

Türkiye has criticized the European Union over its newly adopted strategic assessment document, accusing the bloc of taking a biased and unfair approach by overlooking Ankara's status as a candidate for EU membership.

In a post on X, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli said the document failed to accurately reflect Türkiye's strategic role in European security and regional affairs.

"The document in question has been drafted in a manner that attempts to overshadow the fact that the foundations of a new era were laid at the historic NATO Summit in Ankara, where European allies assumed significant additional responsibilities within NATO and Türkiye's indispensable role was reaffirmed," Keçeli said.

He called on the European Union to adopt a more realistic and constructive approach, urging the bloc to formulate policies that better serve the interests of both Türkiye and the EU.

The criticism follows the European Union Council's approval on July 14 of the document titled "Common Understanding: The Threats and Challenges We Face – An Assessment of the EU Strategic Environment." The strategic assessment includes provisions related to Türkiye, Cyprus, and broader regional security issues.

Ankara has long maintained that its contributions to NATO and European security should be more fully recognized by the European Union, while repeatedly calling for renewed momentum in its long-stalled EU accession process.
